Spring is the window. Tomatoes, chillies, capsicum and basil all want to be sown about now if they are going to crop before the heat arrives, and putting them straight into a garden bed in October is a gamble. One cold night, one heavy shower, one slug, and the whole row is gone before you knew it had germinated.

Raising them under cover first takes the gamble out. This seed starter kit gives you five separate propagation stations, each with twelve cells, a clear humidity dome and its own grow light. The seed gets steady warmth, steady moisture and a steady day length instead of whatever the weather and the kitchen windowsill happen to offer that week.

Why It Stands Out
  • Five trays, not one — run five varieties side by side on their own schedules instead of crowding everything into a single seedling tray and losing track of what is what.
  • 60 cells across the kit — twelve planting cells per tray, which is a whole season's worth of vegetables, herbs and flowers in one go.
  • A grow light on every tray — eight LEDs built into each dome, so no tray is stuck fighting for the one bright spot on the bench.
  • A spectrum mixed for seed germination — 3000K warm white, 5000K cool white and 460nm blue together, rather than one flat colour.
  • Five brightness levels and a repeating timer — set 3, 9 or 12 hours once and the cycle runs itself while you are at work.
  • Four adjustable vents in each dome — hold the humidity in while seeds are coming up, then open them as the seedlings harden.
  • Drainage in every cell over a watertight base — water leaves the root zone and lands in the tray, not on the bench.

Where to Put Them
  • The kitchen or laundry bench — the job they do best. Warm, visible, and close enough that you actually check them.
  • A shelf in the shed or garage — the lights mean the space does not need a window at all.
  • The potting bench under cover — sow out of the wind and the rain, then carry the tray straight to the bed.
  • An enclosed verandah or sunroom — warm through a spring day and protected from a cold snap at night.
  • A spare room or study — five trays take up less bench than one big propagator.
  • The greenhouse shelf — extra light on the dull end of a shelf that never gets enough sun.
  • Beside a windowsill that is not pulling its weight — the usual cause of pale, leggy seedlings leaning at the glass.
How It Works

1. The dome holds the moisture in — a clear cover over the cells keeps humidity around the seed while it swells and splits.
2. The vents let you taper it off — four adjustable openings per dome, closed for germination and opened as the seedlings come up.
3. The light sets the day length — eight LEDs per tray run a mixed spectrum directly above the cells, so growth is even rather than leaning.
4. The controller sets strength and hours — five brightness levels and a 3, 9 or 12 hour timer that repeats itself each day.

How to Sow and Grow

1. Fill the cells with seed-raising mix — not garden soil and not heavy potting mix; fine mix is what lets a small root get away.
2. Sow at the depth on the packet and firm the mix down gently over the top.
3. Water until it is damp, not wet — soggy mix in a closed dome is how seed rots instead of sprouting.
4. Fit the dome and close the vents while you are waiting for germination.
5. Plug the lights in and set the timer — connect the USB control cable to a 5V 2A source and pick your daily hours.
6. Open the vents once the shoots are up, then harden the seedlings off outside for a few days before they go into the bed.
Tip: label the trays as you sow, not afterwards. Every seedling looks identical for the first fortnight, and the ten labels in the box exist because of exactly that.

Care and Maintenance
  • Wash the cells between sowings — warm soapy water and a rinse. Old mix left in a cell is where damping off starts.
  • Wipe the dome clear — condensation leaves a film that cuts the light reaching the seedlings.
  • Keep the controller off the bench top — sit it clear of the trays before you water.
  • Stack them away dry — the trays nest together, so the whole kit stores flat until the next sowing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a power adapter included?
No. The lights run from the included smart-control USB cable, which needs a 5 V 2 A USB adapter. Keep the controller clear of the trays before watering.
How does the timer work?
Choose 3, 9 or 12 hours and the timer repeats the cycle every day, so the lights run while you are at work. You can also choose from 5 brightness levels.
What should I fill the cells with?
Use fine seed-raising mix, not garden soil or heavy potting mix. Sow at the depth on the seed packet, firm gently and water until damp but not wet, as soggy mix in a closed dome can rot seed.
When should I open the vents?
Keep the four vents closed while seeds germinate to hold in humidity. Open them once shoots are up, then harden seedlings off outside for a few days before planting into the bed.
Where can I set them up?
On a kitchen or laundry bench, a shed or garage shelf, an undercover potting bench, an enclosed verandah or sunroom, a spare room or a greenhouse shelf. The built-in lights mean no window is needed. Each tray is approx. 18.5 x 14 x 14 cm.
What is included and how do I clean it?
You get 5 x 12-cell trays, 5 humidity domes, 5 x 8-LED grow lights, 5 watertight base trays, 1 smart-control USB cable, 10 plant labels and 2 small plant tools. Wash the cells in warm soapy water between sowings, wipe condensation film off the domes, and stack the trays away dry.
