Weeds and moss love the joints between pavers, the cracks along the driveway and the edges of concrete paths, and normal trimmer line just bounces off them or wears away in seconds. This paver weed brush fits your brush cutter in place of the standard head, mounting straight onto the standard 25.4 mm (1 inch) mounting hole. The spinning carbon steel wires scrub weeds, moss and ground-in grime out of the joints and off the surface, so you can clear a whole patio in the time it would take to do a few metres on your knees.

It's a fast, chemical-free way to tidy up paving, driveways and paths before summer, and to take the slip out of shady paths after a wet winter. Instead of kneeling with a crack weeder or spraying the joints and waiting a week for the weeds to brown off, you walk the brush cutter along the surface and the wire brush does the scrubbing for you.

Why It Stands Out
  • Made for hard surfaces — the stiff steel wires are designed to work on concrete pavers, plain concrete and bitumen, the hard surfaces where nylon line shreds almost straight away. It turns a tool you already own into a paving cleaner.
  • Twisted carbon steel wire — the wires are twisted together, which gives them the stiffness to dig down into joints and cracks rather than skating across the top of them.
  • 15 cm across — wide enough to cover ground quickly on an open patio, and still narrow enough to follow a single joint line or run along a kerb.
  • Fits standard brush cutters — mounts on any brush cutter with the common 25.4 mm (1 inch) arbor, using the same washers and nut as your blade or head.
  • No chemicals — nothing sprayed on the paving, so no weedkiller washing into the garden beds, the lawn or the stormwater drain, and no waiting before pets and kids can use the area.
  • Saves your back and knees — the job that normally means hours crouched over the pavers with a knife or crack weeder is done standing up.
  • Gets the roots out of the joints — the wires pull the weed and most of the root out of the sand joint, so regrowth is much slower than when you just pull the tops off.
Where to Use
  • Paved patios and alfresco areas — clear the weeds and moss out of the joints before the entertaining season starts, and the whole area looks freshly laid again.
  • Driveways — clean the expansion joints, the cracks and the strip along the edges, which is where weeds keep coming back year after year.
  • Garden paths and steps — scrub the slippery green film off shady paths and steps, which is a real safety issue after rain.
  • Pool surrounds — tidy the joints between pool pavers without spraying anything that could wash into the water.
  • Kerbs, edges and garden edging — clean the line where concrete meets lawn or garden bed, where grass creeps over and weeds take hold.
  • Sheds, carports and side passages — clear the narrow, neglected strips down the side of the house that never get swept.

How It Works

1. It replaces the trimmer head — the brush mounts on the brush cutter's 25.4 mm arbor, held on by the standard washers and nut.
2. The wires spin at speed — as the brush cutter runs, the wire bristles turn fast enough to become rigid.
3. The tips scrub — the wire tips dig into joints, cracks and the surface texture, tearing out weeds, moss and dirt as they pass.
4. You guide the pass — hold the brush flat for open surfaces or tip it slightly to work along a joint, moving steadily rather than pressing down.

How to Use

1. Make it safe first — stop the brush cutter and pull off the spark plug lead, or take out the battery, before you change heads.
2. Check your arbor — measure the mounting hole. It has to be 25.4 mm, the same size most brush cutter blades use.
3. Fit the brush — take the old head or blade off, fit the brush with the correct washers, and tighten the nut fully. Spin it by hand to check it runs true.
4. Gear up properly — safety glasses or a face shield, long pants, gloves and closed shoes. A wire brush throws grit, stones and the occasional broken wire.
5. Work slowly and let it cut — move along the joints at a walking pace and let the wire tips do the work. Pressing hard wears the wires out faster and can chip soft paving.
6. Sweep up afterwards — sweep away the weeds, moss and loose sand, then top the paver joints back up with jointing sand if the brush has pulled a lot out.
Tip: work the joints first with the brush tipped slightly on edge, then flatten it out for a pass across the open paving. Finishing in that order lifts the weeds out of the joints and sweeps the surface clean in one go.

Care and Maintenance
  • Clean it out after each job — grass, roots and wet moss wrap themselves around the wires and dry hard. Pull the build-up out while it's soft, or the brush loses its bite and starts throwing itself out of balance.
  • Dry it before storing — this is carbon steel, not stainless, so it will rust if it's put away damp. Wipe it down after wet jobs and let it dry before it goes on the shelf.
  • Give it a light oil in winter — if the brush is sitting unused for months, a light wipe of machine oil on the wires keeps surface rust away, which matters near the coast.
  • Inspect the wires before every use — look for wires that are broken, badly bent or much shorter than the rest. Worn brushes throw more wire and cut less, so replace the head once it's down to short stubs.
  • Keep the mounting area clean — clear sand and dirt from the centre hole and the washers so the brush seats flat against the gearbox. A brush that doesn't seat properly will vibrate.
  • Never run it loose — if the nut won't tighten fully or the brush wobbles when you spin it by hand, stop and fix the mounting before starting the tool.
  • Store it out of reach — hang it up in the shed. The wire ends stay sharp and can scratch hands, hoses and paintwork if it's left lying around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it fit my brush cutter?
It fits brush cutters with a 25.4 mm (1 inch) mounting hole. Measure the mounting hole on your brush cutter before ordering.
Is the brush cutter or mounting hardware included?
No. You receive 1 wire weed brush head. The brush cutter and mounting hardware are not included. It mounts with the same washers and nut as your blade or head.
What surfaces can I use it on?
It is made for pavers, concrete, stone and bitumen. It is not for lawn trimming. Steel wire can mark sandstone, coloured concrete, sealed pavers and soft decorative stone, so test it on a small hidden section first.
What safety gear do I need?
Wear safety glasses or a face shield, long pants, gloves and closed shoes. A wire brush throws grit, stones and the occasional broken wire. Stop the brush cutter and disconnect the spark plug lead or remove the battery before changing heads.
How do I use it for the best result?
Move along the joints at a walking pace and let the wire tips do the work. Hold the brush flat for open surfaces or tip it slightly to follow a joint. Pressing hard wears the wires faster and can chip soft paving. Sweep up afterwards and top up the joints with jointing sand if needed.
How do I care for the brush?
Pull out grass and moss after each job while it is soft, and dry the brush before storing, as carbon steel rusts if put away damp. Check the wires before every use and replace the head once it is worn down to short stubs. Never run it if it wobbles or the nut will not tighten fully.
