Most bird baths sit on the ground, where cats can reach them and the water goes flat and green by the end of the week. This one hangs. A glass bowl on a chain, a solar fountain in the middle cascading water down three tiers, and a seed tray around the rim. Hang it from a pergola beam or a branch in the sun and it runs on its own, with no cable, no battery and no power point anywhere near it.

Why It Stands Out
-
Hangs out of reach — birds drink and bathe off the ground, away from cats and dogs. For small birds that is a big part of the appeal of a hanging bird bath
-
Three-tier cascade — water spills down three levels into the bowl. Birds are drawn to the sound and sparkle of moving water, and the movement is what gets a bird bath noticed
-
Solar, no wiring — a solar water feature in the truest sense: sun on the panel runs the pump, with no lead to run out to a pergola and nothing to switch on
-
Moving water stays fresher — circulation keeps the surface turning over instead of sitting flat, so the water stays clearer and more inviting than a still dish
-
Bird bath and feeder in one — a seed tray runs around the bowl rim. Use it or leave it empty; the bath works either way
-
Decorative glass bird bath bowl — a pressed-glass bowl in blue or pink that catches the light, so it looks good hanging in the garden even when nothing is visiting
-
Small footprint — a solar powered bird bath 23.5 cm across suits balconies, courtyards and verandahs where a pedestal bath won't fit

Where to Hang It
-
Pergolas and verandah beams — the easiest spot. Hang it where you can see it from inside and it becomes a garden water feature you actually watch
-
Tree branches — a sturdy low branch with sun on it. Birds like cover nearby to retreat to between drinks
-
Balconies and courtyards — off a wall bracket or plant hook. A balcony bird bath is often the only way apartment dwellers get birds visiting at all
-
Beside a garden bed or pond — as a hanging decorative piece above planting, it adds movement and sound without taking any ground space
-
Anywhere with direct sun — sun on the panel is what runs the fountain, so pick the sunniest spot you have

How It Works
1. Sun powers the pump — the solar panel drives the pump directly. There is no battery, so it runs in direct sun and stops in shade, under heavy cloud and at night.
2. Water climbs the centre column — the pump pushes water up to the top tier.
3. It cascades down three levels — water spills from tier to tier and back into the bowl, then round again.
4. Flow follows the sun — strong midday sun gives a full cascade; morning and late afternoon give a gentler trickle. That's normal for a solar fountain with no battery.

How to Set It Up
1. Pick a spot with good sun — in Australia a north-facing position gets the most. The best compromise is strong morning sun with some afternoon shade, so the fountain runs but the water doesn't get too warm in summer.
2. Hang it securely — use a solid hook or bracket that can take the weight of the bowl full of water, around 2.5 kg all up.
3. Fill with fresh water — up to about 2 L. Keep the level up so the pump sits level and stays covered.
4. Add seed only if you want to — the rim tray takes a small amount. Many people run it as a water-only bath, which is the simplest way to help birds.
5. Give birds a few days — it can take a week or more before local birds trust a new water source.
Tip: in hot weather a shallow bowl in the sun loses water fast. Top it up every day or two in summer, and never let the pump run dry.

Care and Maintenance
-
Change the water often — empty and refill every couple of days. Fresh water is what keeps the birds coming back
-
Scrub the bowl weekly — a brush and plain water removes the film that builds up. No detergent or chemicals
-
Clear old seed — if you use the tray, remove leftover or damp seed so it doesn't go mouldy
-
Wipe the solar panel — dust and droppings on the panel are the usual reason the flow weakens
-
Bring it in for storms — it's glass on a chain. Take it down before high wind or hail
-
Check the chain and hook — make sure the fixing is still firm every few weeks, especially after wind
