Most outdoor lights point at the ground. They mark the edge of a path and leave everything above knee height in the dark, so the fence that runs the whole length of your yard — the single biggest surface you own — stays a black wall from sunset onwards. This one works the other way round. The cut-out shell throws its light outwards onto the timber behind it, so the fence stops being a boundary and becomes the thing people look at. One unit lights a circle of pattern roughly the width of your arm span. Four spaced along a run turn a plain paling fence into the best feature in the garden, and none of them needs a cable, a switch or an electrician.

Why It Stands Out
  • It Lights the Wall, Not the Lawn — The pattern is cut right through the shell, so the light lands on the surface behind it. That is what separates these solar wall lights from a row of stakes pointing at the grass.
  • IP65 Rated — A stated rating, not a vague promise. Sealed against rain and dust, which is what it needs to live on an exposed fence through a storm season.
  • Warm LED Light — Warm white rather than cold blue, so the pattern reads gold against timber instead of grey against concrete.
  • Charges and Switches Itself — The panel takes care of the day and the sensor takes care of the night. Like all good outdoor solar lights there is nothing to plug in and nothing to remember.
  • 8.5 by 8.5 Centimetres — Smaller than a coffee mug. The unit stays discreet in daylight and the shadow it casts does all the work after dark.
  • One Screw, No Wiring — A single central fixing through the back plate. No cable run, no transformer, no trench across the lawn, and it goes where you want it rather than where the power is.
  • On and Off Switch — A physical switch on the rear face, so it can be shut down over winter or while you are away.
Where to Place It
  • Along the Back Fence — The job it was built for. Space them evenly and a run of fence lights turns the longest, dullest surface in the yard into the view from the back door.
  • Either Side of the Gate — A pair makes an entrance out of an opening, and a solar gate light shows people where the latch is without a floodlight in anyone's eyes.
  • On the Deck Posts — Mounted at rail height they work as deck lights that wash the boards and the balustrade rather than glaring across the table.
  • Down a Stair Wall — One per landing on the wall beside outdoor steps gives you step lights that mark the change in level and look like they were designed in.
  • Under the Patio Roof — On the wall behind the outdoor setting the pattern sits at head height, which is where patio lights actually want to be.
  • On a Balcony Wall — With no power point and no drilling into a slab, balcony lights are usually impossible. These are not.
  • Beside the Front Door — Flanking the entry it reads as a solar wall sconce and gives the facade something to do after dark.
How It Works
  1. The Panel Takes the Day — The solar panel on the top face charges the internal battery through daylight hours. No cable, no mains, nothing switched.
  2. The Sensor Takes the Night — As the light drops the sensor brings the LED up, and at dawn it shuts it down again. Decorative garden lights that need a timer set are decorative garden lights nobody uses.
  3. The Shell Does the Rest — The LED sits behind a shell cut right through with an openwork pattern. Light escapes through the cut-outs and projects that pattern onto whatever the unit is mounted against, the same way a moroccan lantern throws its shape across a room.
How to Fit It
  1. Charge It First — Leave it face up in full sun for a day before the first night, so it starts from a full battery instead of a partial one.
  2. Pick a West Wall If You Can — The panel ends up vertical once it is mounted, so it wants sun coming at it sideways rather than from overhead. A west-facing wall catches the low afternoon sun square on all summer.
  3. Mount It at Eye Height or Above — Roughly 1.5 to 1.8 metres puts the cast pattern where people see it rather than where they walk through it.
  4. Space a Run Evenly — For a fence, set them at even intervals and keep the circles of light clear of each other. Overlapping patterns cancel each other out and you lose the effect you paid for.
  5. Switch On, Then Screw It Up — Set the switch on the rear face to on first, because you cannot reach it once the unit is against the wall. Then drive the single central screw home.
  6. Turn It to Aim the Pattern — It pivots on that one screw, so rotate the body until the cast pattern sits how you want it, then nip the screw up firm so wind cannot shift it.

Tip: Mount it on weathered timber rather than a smooth rendered wall. The grain breaks up the projected pattern and gives it texture, which is why every photograph of these is taken against a paling fence.

Care and Maintenance
  • Wipe the Panel — Dust and salt film on the panel cost more run time than anything else. A damp cloth every few weeks is the entire maintenance job.
  • Clear the Cut-Outs — Cobwebs and leaf litter collect in the openwork and soften the pattern. A dry brush restores it.
  • Check the Screw After Storms — The whole unit turns on one fixing, so give it a quarter turn test after heavy weather and nip it up if the pattern has drifted.
  • Rinse Off Coastal Salt — Near the beach, an occasional freshwater rinse keeps the finish from hazing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of light does it give?
A warm white LED shines through an openwork pattern cut into the black shell, projecting that pattern onto the wall or fence behind it. Each unit lights a circle about the width of your arm span.
Is it waterproof?
It is IP65 rated, sealed against rain and dust, so it can stay on an exposed fence year round. Rinse off salt now and then if you live near the coast.
Which wall should I mount it on?
The panel sits vertical once mounted, so a west-facing wall that catches low afternoon sun works best. Mount it about 1.5 to 1.8 m high. Weathered timber gives the pattern the most texture.
How do I install it?
Charge it in full sun for a day first. Turn the switch on the back to on before mounting, as you cannot reach it afterwards, then fix it with one central screw. Rotate it to aim the pattern and tighten the screw.
How far apart should I space them?
Space them evenly so the circles of light do not overlap, as overlapping patterns cancel each other out. Four along a run turn a plain paling fence into a garden feature.
How do I look after it?
Wipe the panel with a damp cloth every few weeks, brush cobwebs out of the cut-outs, and check the screw after storms in case the pattern has shifted.
